I am in the op-ed today! For a really fascinating essay about the wolves and moose of Isle Royale, the largest island located in Lake Superior. Apparently the moose swam over from the main land around 1900 and then an ice bridge that formed from Canada in the late 1940s enabled the wolves to cross over. Since it’s an island this made for the perfect science experiment, allowing researchers to observing the interactions between the two species and how one affects the other. Now however due to inbreeding in the wolf population their numbers are dwindling and the question is whether people should intervene by introducing new wolves into the island or to let nature take it’s course. Without the wolves the moose have no predators and will upset the balance of the ecosystem.

Another crazy sketch-to-finish-in-one-day turnaround! I love working in black and white although I don’t get a chance to too often. I ended up going for a circle shape referencing the interconnected nature of the two species and to try something interesting with the page. Thanks to AD Matt Dorfman for laying things out beautifully!

so very excited to announce my work has been selected for this year’s Bologna Children’s Book Fair as part of the Illustrators exhibition!!! This is one of the world’s largest international book fairs with hundreds of publishers from all over the globe. It’s always been a little dream of mine to be part of this show!

I submitted a personal series I’ve been working on based on the novel Hard Times by Charles Dickens, who is one of my favorite authors of all time. They were created using a combination of screen printing and drawing. It was great trying out a few new experiments and getting back to drawing. As part of the selection process I had to send in the originals.

once the fair is over they will be on view at various museums in Japan. So if anyone happens to be in that part of the world they should stop by!

just did a piece for the NYtimes op-ed that’s out today! About developed countries and investors buying up huge tracts of land in poor countries for agriculture. The governments of the poor countries welcome the money but this situation leaves very little land for the actual inhabitants to grow their own crops.

I did a piece for the Sundance Film Festival A-Z book designed by Todd Oldham Studios. Each letter is associated with various movies, actors and directors that begins with that letter and the artist had to make an illustration representing all the different elements. Mine was V for the Visitor. Thanks to Greg for getting me on board!

what I did this weekend.

screen printed the NPR piece bigger for the upcoming society of illustrators show! I got a total of 8 good prints on rives paper 18 x 24. Two of them are spoken for already, but if you want to buy one email me. Or you can come see it in New York City in January!

more food!! so very excited when AD Jordan Awan contacted me to be part of the New Yorker food issue, as its something I look forward to reading every year. This issue is full of interesting articles on all manner of food, including bread, shashuska and mangos just to name a few.

The piece I did is for the table of contents of the digital edition, and it’s the first time my art has been digitally interactive. Each of the food items in the picture correspond to a story featuring that item. When you click on the food it takes you to the article. Initially this was going to be just a grid format of all the food items in neat little rows, but we figured this was more interesting.

Lots of news! so here’s a piece I did that just came out for Plansponsor November, art directed by the ever amazing SooJin Buzelli, showing five things to know. The cover of this issue is beautifully done by the one and only Wesley Allsbrook! Really enjoyed how the designers incorporated my piece into the layout, matching the colors for the text and using a little snippet of the image in the later pages.

and I found out earlier this week my piece for the NPR calendar won a gold medal from the Society of illustrators Annual show!! Very honored and excited to be among such an amazing group of winners this year, still can’t believe it! A BIG thank you to AD Katie Burke, SOI and all the judges. Looking forward to the opening in January!
